Playlists to Imagine Other Worlds

Playlists to Imagine Other Worlds is a project to create playlists and DJ sets with voices and rhythms that emerge—mainly from the Global South—and claim the right to exist, sound, and create from other bodies and places. I will work with music such as neoperreo, dembow, futuristic cumbia, baile funk, latincore, afrobeat, amapiano, kuduro, afrofuturistic music… genres that sound, resonate, and remix their roots with the technologies of the present, that resist with deep bass, with beats that pulse like a collective heart. But there will also be room for cracks, for the dissonant: noise, sound art, free jazz, experimental music, music that historically proposes ways of doing things that are constantly changing, evolving, that resonate with the technologies and ways of doing, thinking, and listening of our time. Likewise, it is important for me to create musical sets conceived as moments of criticism, resistance, and celebration in the face of the heteropatriarchal, racist, and capitalist systems that have historically excluded and silenced women, LGBTQIA+ communities, racialized people, and multiple forms of dissent.
This is not music conceived as objects of study or exotic pieces for Western ears, but rather living practices of contemporary cultures that recognize themselves as producers of knowledge, through sound, through listening, challenging the present and daring to imagine possible futures, through enjoyment, rage, collectivity, and desire. In each listening, a cry and a whisper, a dance and a wound, a possibility of being together, of dancing together, of listening together.
