From the Window – Manzanillo 33, interior 15b

The sounds of the environment have meanings and functions that we attribute to them, on a personal level and / or by social practice. In order to understand sounds, we must take into account the social, cultural, political, economic, and geographical factors that affect the practice of society, the time and space in which it is perceived. Thus, they help us differentiate and interpret the different sound environments of a city, state, region, etc., contribute to locate the time and place in which we find ourselves, to realize the multiple physical and social interactions of our environment and how we are part of it.

At the same time, the technologies of recording and propagating sound help us to interpret, analyze and preserve the sound information of the different contexts, always in constant change and contribute to recognize the diverse social aspects of multiculturalism so present today.

With this idea, for a week and at different times of the day, I recorded with a hand-held recorder many sounds that are heard from the window of my apartment, which is on the third floor. Later with software I edited and assembled the registers, constructing a sound landscape, in an order where the sounds of the morning are first heard, then the sounds of the afternoon and finally those of the night. And so, spread this soundscape as an invitation to the listeners to become aware of the sound dimension of their daily lives.

Granos Convulsa I and II

The dense granulation of the piece was for accentuating what I take to the creation of this piece, silence, in its different types and/or facets depending on the context in which and as is used, in its interaction with the emotions and experiences, in its self knowledge. I saw silence in its intentionality, not in its physical nonexistence, if not rather in its existence/psychological experience. Silence in this piece lasts and works of a way that with a variation in the time itself would give another sense to the piece, as well as any silence to the life.
